How to Register an IEC | Get the import-export license?



Import Export Code is a 10 digit number that is issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade), Department of Commerce, Government of India. It is also known as Import and Export Code. It is required for companies and businesses to obtain the Import-Export code to start a business that deals with import and export in the Indian Territory. For Import-Export code there are certain processes and conditions that you need to fulfill. You need to adhere to certain regulations.

Why do you need an Import and Export license?

Import export code are two of the most important components of international trade. Imports are the goods and services brought into one country from another country. Most of the countries import goods that are not produced efficiently in the domestic market as efficiently as in the exporting country. Exports are the goods and services produced in one country and purchased by the people of another country. If goods are produced domestically and sold in a foreign country, it is an export. So in simple, the process of buying and selling products and services in international markets is defined as import&export


Why Import and export code is required?

  1. IEC acts as a License for import and export of goods.

  2. Goods are cleared from customs authorities along with import-export code.

  3. IEC reduces the transport of illegal goods.

  4. No one can obtain IEC without full information on the good that will be imported or exported. Thus it restricts the transport of illegal goods.

What are the benefits of the import&export code?

  • Expansion of Business: This license is necessary for the expansion of your business. As with the IE code, you can sell manufactured goods to clients overseas.

  • No mandatory return filings: IEC does not require the filing of any return. Once you have applied for the registration there is no need to file an annual return.

  • Easy Processing: It is a very simple procedure to get IEC code registration from the DGFT within a period of 10 to 15 days after submitting the application.

  • No need for renewal: IEC is a permanent license which means that it is valid for a lifetime. Once allotted, there is no need for any kind of renewal.

  • Increased credibility: import & export code provides a business more credibility in the international market.


Following are the documents that are required for IEC code-:

  1. PAN card of the applicant

  2. Address proof of business premises

  3. Electricity bills

  4. Details of Directors/partners

  5. A digital signature of the applicant

  6. Canceled cheque

  7. Copy of bank account

  8. Passport size photograph

  • Following are the steps that are mandatory for import & export license in India:

  • The first step that you need to get the application form for IEC. It is available online from the DGFT website.

  • You can make the application in form no. ANF 2A.

  • Collect all the documents that are required for IE code such as bank account, PAN no, business registration proof, etc.

  • Thereafter fill up sections A, B, and D of the form, and submit for getting the new code.

  • Sign up each page of the application form.

  • You need to provide your passport size photo along with the documents and form.

  • You have to send an IEC license fee of Rs.250/- (Rupees two hundred fifty only), along with your applications. The money has to be sent through EFT (electronic fund transfer) directly to DGFT.

  • In case of offline submission, you have to pay through a demand draft for Rs.250/-(Rupees two hundred fifty only) to the Regional Office of DGFT.

  • You also have to provide a self-addressed envelope with Rs.30/- (Rupees thirty only) along with the filled-in application form and other requisite documents.
